Before I went to Hong Kong I was trying to figure out what to pack? The what-shall-I-take-with-me-question is one oft he hardest, as I truly and deeply detest packing. It gets worse the older I get. Hence I have started writing lists – either the good old fashioned way with a with pen and paper or an excel sheet. This time I chose the latter.
Everything that needed to travel with me – from rollers, over passport to hand bag – went on that list.

Vor meiner Abreise nach Hongkong musste ich mir Gedanken darüber machen, was ich mitnehmen wollte. Die Was-soll-ich-mitnehmen-Frage ist so ungefähr die schwierigste, weil ich Packen aus tiefstem Herzen verabscheue. Deshalb habe ich angefangen Listen zu schreiben, entweder ganz altmodisch mit Stift und Zettel, oder schon etwas neuzeitlicher als Excel Tabelle. Heuer entschied ich mich für die letztere Variante. Von Lockenwicklern, über Reisepass, bis hin zur Handtasche trug ich alles in diese Liste ein.

I just wrote down what I thought would fit my travel needs.

Ich schrieb einfach all die Sachen auf, von denen ich annahm, dass ich sie gebrauchen konnte.

Then I made a second list with the days I’d be there:

Danach erstelle ich eine Liste mit den Tagen, die ich dort sein sollte:

1. Friday – travel day / Freitag – Reisetag
2. Saturday (afternoon arrival) / Samstag (Ankunft am Nachmittag)
3. Sunday / Sonntag
4. Monday / Montag
5. Tuesday / Dienstag
6. Wednesday / Mittwoch
7. Thursday (late departure) / Donnerstag (späte Abreise)

For every day I wrote down what I’d presumably wear and crossed those items off the initial list. By doing so I put together outfits ahead of time, so that once I was in Hong Kong I didn’t have to worry about missing anything, even if it was just a necklace or a bangle. On the other hand this way I made sure that my outfits were complete and I didn’t take too much stuff. Why in the end I packed an extra 4 t-thirts I didn’t need, or why I forgot to pack my sunglasses? The Lord only knows…

Ich stellte mir für jeden Tag zusammen, was ich tragen wollte und strich diese dann aus der ersten Liste. So war sichergestellt, dass ich in Hongkong nichts vermissen würde, sei es auch nur eine Kette oder einen Armreif. Andererseits war so auch gewährleistet, dass ich nicht zu viel einpacken würde. Wieso ich am Ende vier extra T-Shirts mitnahm, die ich unbenutzt wieder mit nach Hause trug und wieso ich meine Sonnenbrille vergaß? Das weiss allein der Liebe Gott.

This saved me an awful lot of unnecessary weight and made my suitcase more roomy inside than I had anticipated, despite the two hand bags I had packed according to my list. Upon arrival back home I knew that I had not needed to take my little Hermès Picotin bag with me. The one bag that came along (my Pochette Accessoires and backpack don’t count) was plenty. Which one it was and why? I’ll tell you next time. Stay tuned!

Diese Vorbereitung ersparte mir ziemlich viel unnötiges Gewicht und sorgte für mehr Platz in meinem Koffer als gedacht. Trotz der beiden Taschen, die ich gemäß meiner Liste eingepackt hatte. Nach meiner Rückkehr war aber klar, dass meine kleine Hermès Picotin unnötig war. Die andere Tasche (meine Pochette Accessoires und der Rücksack zählen nicht!) erfüllte nämlich alle Anforderungen.
