As someone born in Pisces, I am magically drawn to water. Holidays in the mountains? Rather not. Holidays by the sea? Absolutely yes! There is hardly any greater relaxation for me than being by the ocean and listening to the sound of the sea. When the waves hit the beach, the currents swirl the sand and pull it out from under my feet, that’s when the feeling of deep inner peace sets in. No matter how stressed I am at the beginning of a holiday by the sea, as soon as I hear the waves or feel the water around me, the tension ebbs away. 

Als Fische Geborene zieht mich Wasser magisch an. Urlaub in den Bergen? Eher nicht. Urlaub am Wasser? Ja, sofort! Es gibt für mich kaum größere Entspannung, als am Meer zu sein und dem Meeresrauschen zu lauschen. Wenn die Wellen auf den Strand aufschlagen, die Strömungen den Sand verwirbeln und unter den Füßen wegziehen, dann setzt das Gefühl tiefer innerer Ruhe bei mir ein. Egal wie gestresst ich zu Beginn eines Urlaubs am Meer bin, sobald ich die Wellen höre oder das Wasser um mich herum spüre, ebbt die Anspannung ab.

GRANDS FONDS

Grands Fonds thrilled me from the very first moment – both, motif and colors. We’re talking about the early 1990s, when I wore a lot of blue: blue and white striped blouses, blue blazers, classic clothes for work and jeans and blouses in my time off. I always had a few bold and bright pieces, but fora whiled I dressed very classically – also due to my job. This bright pink Grands Fonds was a wonderful contrast.

Grands Fonds hat mich vom erstes Moment an begeistert – sowohl vom Motiv her wie auch von den Farben. Wir sprechen von den frühen 1990er Jahren, da trug ich noch recht viel „bleu“: blauweiß gestreifte Blusen, blaue Blazer, klassische Kleidung für den Job und in der Freizeit Jeans und Blusen. Ich hab zwar immer ein paar farblicher „Rausreisser“ gehabt, aber generell habe ich mich eine Zeit lang – auch berufsbedingt – sehr klassisch gekleidet. Hierzu bildete dieses leuchtende, pinkfarbene Grands Fonds einen wunderschönen Kontrast.

A PLEATED SCARF

Although Grand Fonds was available in pink, I could only get it in the pleated version. And because I liked the colors and the design so much, I bought it and wore it very often. I remember holidays on the island of Sylt, wearing thick woollen sweaters and having the pleated scarf wrapped around my neck several times. Whether I wore a Barbour or down jacket, my pink scarf often flashed out.

Dieses Tuch gab es in Pink damals allerdings nur in der Plissee Variante. Und da mir Farben und Design so gefallen habe, kaufte ich es und trug es viel. Ich erinnere mich an Sylt-Urlaube, dicke Wollpullis und an das Plissee-Tuch mehrfach um den Hals geschlungen. Ob Barbour- oder Daunen-Jacke, mein pinkfarbenes Tuch blitzte oft hervor.

KNOTS

I already mentioned in my blog post about the pleated TohuBohu scarf HERE that knots of pleated scarves come loose quickly. Which is why you should always keep an eye on knots when wearing pleated scarves. In winter, I like to wear the pleated scarf wrapped around my neck 3 times and fix the ends with a small scarf ring, or knot them very, very tightly. However, experience has shown that ends that are knotted very, very tightly also stay put!

Ich erwähnte bereits in meinem Blogpost über das plissierte TohuBohu Tuch HIER, dass sich Knoten von Plissee Tüchern schnell lösen. Deshalb sollte man beim Tragen immer mal ein Auge auf die oft locker gemachten Knoten werfen. Im Winter trage ich das Plissee-Tuch gern 3 x um den Hals gewickelt  und fixiere die Enden mit einem kleinen Tuchring. Die Erfahrung hat aber gezeigt, dass ganz, ganz fest verknoteten Enden auch halten!

CIRCULATION OF AIR

I noticed that I don’t perspire under a rather tightly wrapped plissé carré and I think it’s because of the pleats. A regular scarf touches the skin fully, whereas the silk of a pleated scarf doesn’t. This allows the air to circulate and ensures something like a balanced climate. 

Mir ist aufgefallen, dass ich unter einem mehrfach gewickelten Plissé Carré nicht schwitze. Ich denke es liegt an den Falten. Denn weil das Tuch nicht, wie ein reguläres Carré, im Ganzen auf der Haut aufliegt,  sondern immer nur in feine „Streifen“,  kann die Luft zirkulieren und sorgt für ein ausgeglichenes Klima.

GRANDS FONDS SECOND HAND FIND

Long ago I found the regular silk version and in the identical colorway of Grand Fonds on an auction house site. Now you might ask why would somebody want to own the same motif in the identical colors twice? Because the fish appear – depending on the way I knot the scarf – a lot brighter than on its pleated counterpart. The seller didn’t ask much because it has a little pull and that’s why I grabbed it, which to this day I don’t regret.

Vor langer Zeit entdeckte ich das Grands Fonds Motiv in der gleichen Farbgebung auf einer Auktions-Haus-Seite. Nun könnten Sie fragen warum will man zwei mal das gleiche Motiv besitzen? Weil die Fische – je nach Bindung des Tuches – plakativer und besser wirken als auf seinem plissierten Gegenstück. Der Preis für das gebrauchte Tuch war damals äußerst moderat, weil es einen Ziehfaden hat und deshalb griff ich zu. Ein Schritt, den ich bis heute nicht bereue!

GRANDS FONDS TRIVIA

Annie Faivre designed motifs for Hermès since 1987 and later added a monkey to every design. However, Grands Fonds was before she added a monkey to her signature.

Annie Faivre hat seit 1987 Motive für Hermès kreiert und irgendwann angefangen jedem Design ein Äffchen hinzuzufügen . Grands Fonds stammt allerdings aus der Zeit davor.

Hermès launched a limited edition watch roundabout 2019 to which they have added a dial with a detail of Grands Fonds made of glass. Beautiful, isn’t it?

Hermés hat ca. 2019 eine limitierte Uhr auf den Markt gebracht, dessen Zifferblatt ein Detail aus Grands Fonds aus Glas ziert. Wunderschön, nicht wahr?
