Its time for another Share Your World and vintage auctions are part of my world. Once again this week’s questions are by pensitivity101 HERE  Let’s get started.

1. Have you ever been to an auction?

Yes! The first time I went to an auction my aunt took me. She was into vintage dolls and tiny little items made of ivory and silver. I must have been no older than 9 or 10 and I was very impressed by the atmosphere in the room. Over the years I have attended various auctions. The first thing I purchased at auction was a little gilded ring. I loved it (still have it) and it didn’t break the bank.

VINTAGE AUCTIONS

The next auctions I attended were vintage auctions for cars and automobilia. I found some interesting Mercedes catalogues form the 1950’s and a two lovely vintage leather cases. One is small and monogrammed. I use it for knick-knacks. The larger houses is a vanity case with brushes etc. Lovely. But I don’t use it. It is more of a décor object. And of course I love to attend vintage auctions for accessories such as scarves and handbags HERE 

What I’ve learned throughout the years is that you have to set yourself a limit. That’s most important, since people tend to forget that when they buy at auction they will be charged a premium on top of the hammer price. Hence if people forget that a bargain can easily turn into a an expensive experience.

 1a. Waren Sie schon einmal auf einer Auktion?

 Ja! Bei meiner ersten Auktion war ich 9 oder 10 Jahre alt. Meine Tante nahm mich mit. Sie interessierte sich für alte Puppen und winzig kleine Gegenstände aus Elfenbein und Silber. Ich war damals sehr beeindruckt von der Atmosphäre in dem Raum.

Im Laufe der Jahre habe ich an verschiedenen Auktionen teilgenommen. Das erste, was ich bei einer Auktion kaufte, war ein kleiner vergoldeter Ring, den ich noch immer habe. Er gefiel mir sehr gut und der Preis hat gepasst.

VINTAGE AUKTIONEN

Die nächsten Auktionen, die ich besuchte, waren Vintage Auktionen für Autos und Automobilia. Ich fand einige interessante Mercedes Kataloge aus den 1950iger Jahren , sowie eine Leder-Box und einen Leder-Koffer. Die Box ist klein und mit Monogramm versehen. Ich verwende sie für Nippes. Der Koffer ist eigentlich eine Art Kosmetik-Koffer und enthält Bürsten usw. Wunderschön. Aber ich benutze ihn nicht. Er ist ist zu einem Dekorationsobjekt geworden. Und selbstverständlich liebe ich Auktionen, auf denen man Vintage Accessoires wie Tücher und Handtaschen HIER ersteigern kann! – Was ich im Laufe der Jahre gelernt habe, ist, dass man sich eine Obergrenze setzen muss. Das ist das Wichtigste, denn die Leute vergessen oft, dass sie beim Kauf auf einer Auktion einen Aufschlag auf den Hammer-Preis zahlen müssen. Wenn man das vergisst, kann aus einem Schnäppchen schnell ein teuren Erlebnis werden.

2. Were you ever in a school play or concert? 

Yes, both. Having gone to a Waldorf school for 12 years we regularly had school plays and also concerts for our co-students and parents.

 2a. Hast du jemals an einer Schulaufführung oder einem Konzert teilgenommen?

Ja, beides. Ich bin 12 Jahre lang Waldorf-Schülerin gewesen. Dort hatten wir regelmäßig Schulaufführungen und auch Konzerte für unsere Mitschüler und Eltern.

3. In your working life, were you ever rewarded financially for your services apart from your salary?

Yes. This was new to me when I came to Austria many years ago. My first boss here in Vienna would grant me a bonus annually, which I have been very grateful for. When I changed companies years later, it depended on the supervisor and his budget. Having formerly been a personal assistant to some managers I often was astounded by how much or how little of a reward they would grant my colleagues. Clearly some managers had their special “teacher’s pets”…

3a. Wurden Sie in Ihrem Berufsleben – neben Ihrem Gehalt – jemals finanziell für Ihre Dienste entlohnt?

 Ja. Als ich vor vielen Jahren nach Österreich kam, war das Neuland für mich. Mein erster Chef hier in Wien hat mir jährlich einen Bonus gewährt, wofür ich sehr dankbar war. Als ich Jahre später das Unternehmen wechselte, hing es vom Vorgesetzten und seinem Budget ab. Als ehemalige persönliche Assistentin einiger Führungskräfte war ich oft erstaunt, wie viel oder wie wenig finanzielle Anerkennung sie meinen KollegInnen gewährten. Offensichtlich hatten einige Manager ihre speziellen Lieblinge…
